A Room That Was
Always Here
In 1904, Andrew Carnegie’s library opened its doors on Main Street in downtown St. Joseph, and the lowest floor became the archives — where the ledgers, plat maps, and records nobody was meant to browse were kept in the cool and the quiet, behind a door most visitors never noticed.
Over a century later, that room is still the quietest, oldest part of the building. Original Michigan brick, laid by hand and left exactly as the masons finished it. Hand-painted floors worn smooth by decades of footsteps. The same low ceilings that once kept the paper cool and dry now keep the conversation close and the room warm.
Nothing was gutted. The shelves still hold their books, the sepia portraits still watch the room, and the marble-topped tables sit where the card catalog once stood. The brass lamps throw the same pool of light a reading desk would have. Even the cast-iron radiators found a second life — restored and gilded into the face of the bar.
Every glass, every seat, every corner has been considered. Nothing here was designed to feel new. It was designed to feel found.

Outside
The Patio
Just outside the entrance, the patio is built from vintage brick and wrought fencing — the same materials as the building it sits against, so it reads like it grew there rather than got added on.
It faces west toward Lake Michigan. On a clear evening, that makes it one of the best places downtown to sit with a cocktail and watch the sun go down over the water. Same drinks, same room’s worth of care — open air.
Weather permitting, it’s open whenever we are: daily from 4 until 9-ish.

If there are seven or fewer of you, no — seating is first come, first served, and we keep it that way on purpose. Part of the fun is finding a seat and settling in.
Parties of 8 or more do need a reservation, along with a card on file. Those bookings carry an automatic 20% gratuity and a 90-minute limit, and we can’t take groups larger than 10 during regular service on Friday or Saturday nights. Full details are on our group & private event policy.
We don’t. The Archive Lounge is a drinks-only room — craft cocktails, wine, beer, and our house seltzers, done properly. The good news is that downtown St. Joseph is full of excellent food. We happily point people toward Silver Beach Pizza, Ryebell’s, and plenty of other spots within a short walk. Eat first, then come find us.
We’re open daily from 4:00 PM to 9-ish — and most nights we’re pouring closer to 10. Hours can shift with the season and for private events, so if you’re making a special trip, give us a call at (269) 247-5687 to confirm.
The hotel itself is reserved for registered guests of The Library Historic Hotel — the guest floors aren’t open to the public. If you are staying with us, you have full access to the Archive Lounge as part of your stay. Lounge visitors are welcome in the lounge and on the patio.
During regular service the rooftop deck overlooking Lake Michigan is reserved for hotel guests. It can also be booked as a private event space. If you’re visiting just for a drink, you’re more than welcome on our outdoor patio right outside the entrance — vintage brick, wrought fencing, and one of the best places downtown to watch the sun go down. Same cocktails, open air.
No. We’re a completely non-smoking room. This building is over a century old and the original brick, woodwork, and archives inside it are irreplaceable — keeping smoke out is part of preserving them. You’re welcome to step out to the patio.
